Deadhead miles: calculate and cut the cost

Two numbers tell you what deadhead is doing to a load: your deadhead percentage and your effective rate per mile. Both take about ten seconds to figure, and both use the same input: total miles, not loaded miles.
Deadhead percentage = deadhead miles ÷ total miles × 100. Effective RPM = total pay ÷ total miles. That is the whole toolkit. The rest of this guide is how to use it on real loads.
Calculate your deadhead percentage
Add your empty miles to your loaded miles to get total miles, then divide the empty miles by that total. Say a broker offers a load picking up 120 miles from where you sit.
Deadhead percentage
Deadhead miles: 120
Loaded miles: 480
Total miles: 120 + 480 = 600
Deadhead %: 120 ÷ 600 = 0.20 = 20%
For context: under 10% is tight, and ATRI's 2025 operational costs update found deadhead averaged 16.7% of total truck miles in 2024. If your weekly number sits above 20%, one mile in five is working for free.
See what deadhead does to your rate per mile
The rate per mile a broker quotes is usually loaded RPM: pay divided by loaded miles. It flatters the load. Effective RPM divides the same pay by total miles and tells the truth. The gap between loaded and effective RPM is exactly what deadhead costs you in rate.
Loaded RPM vs effective RPM
Rate on the con: $1,200
Loaded RPM: $1,200 ÷ 480 loaded mi = $2.50
Effective RPM: $1,200 ÷ 600 total mi = $2.00
Same load, 50 deadhead mi: $1,200 ÷ 530 = $2.26
That $2.50 was never real. With 120 empty miles, this is a $2.00 load, and a closer pickup at a lower sticker rate could beat it. Effective RPM is the only rate-per-mile number worth comparing across loads.
What counts as a deadhead mile
Count every empty mile from where the truck sits to the pickup, including any empty hop after your last drop. The key is consistency: if you count deadhead one way on Monday and another way on Thursday, your comparisons break.
Track it weekly too, not just per load. Add up the week's empty miles and divide by the week's total miles. A single 150-mile reposition can be fine; a 25% weekly average is a pattern that needs fixing.

Common questions
- What is a good deadhead percentage?
- There is no magic number, but under 10% of total miles is tight, and ATRI's 2025 report put the 2024 industry average at 16.7%. Running above 20% week after week means empty miles are eating a real share of your rate.
- Do I include deadhead when calculating rate per mile?
- Yes, if you want the true number. Loaded RPM divides pay by loaded miles only and looks better than reality. Effective RPM divides the same pay by total miles including deadhead, and it is the number to compare against your cost per mile.
- Is deadhead the same as bobtailing?
- No. Deadhead usually means driving with an empty trailer to reach a pickup. Bobtailing is driving the tractor with no trailer at all. Both are unpaid miles, and both belong in your empty-mile total.
